Installation

Canadian artists Linda Carreiro and RICHard SMOLinski present Summary, a series of delicate textual veils that will be displayed as part of In Other Words for the Fringe Arts Bath. In our version of summaries, we decline to make an exhaustive and cogent argument, instead offering ambiguous, metaphorical and epigrammatic insights for the viewer. The works require a literal and ironical change to the reader’s perspective, as the phrases are suspended sideways, running downwards from the ceiling. Embodying an altered viewpoint the reader/viewer extricates the sensible from the seemingly chaotic web of letters, hopefully finding that the effort yields beneficial insights.[1]

[1] Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the experience of reading Summary will impart any wisdom or enable any epiphanies.

About the artists

Linda Carreiro and RICHard SMOLinski are artists fascinated by language and by its materialization in visual art. While Linda takes pleasure in manipulating found text, appropriating literary works, and altering discarded books, RICHard coins portmanteaus, scrawling them within his images or intervening them into public spaces. Both artists have exhibited their works across Canada, the United States and internationally in solo and group shows. Throughout their long personal relationship the couple have occasionally collaborated; Summary is a result of their creative partnership using text. Linda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art, University of Calgary, Canada. RICHard recently completed his PhD in Art, and is currently a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary.
